Each week The CSPH takes a look at a sexual aid that can be just so helpful for some people, that it needs to be highlighted. This week the sexual aid is Pre-Seed Fertility Friendly Personal Lubricant.
How does this contraption work anyway?
Pre-Seed Fertility Friendly Personal Lubricant is the only lubricant on the market that has been scientifically proven to be safe for use while trying to conceive. This revolutionary lube was created by a sperm physiologist who realized that the stress from trying to get pregnant was contributing to decreased natural lubrication for “TTC” (trying to conceive) couples. These couples were often using lubricants that were further hindering their baby-making productivity, as many commonly used lubricants contain ingredients which can dehydrate and slow sperm. To combat these barriers, Pre-Seed is a glycerin-free, water-based lubricant that is carefully formulated to ensure that it matches the pH of a woman’s natural secretions during her most fertile points in her cycle, and is additionally free from ingredients that are sperm-toxic or decrease sperm motility. (While other lubes are not particularly “sperm-friendly” they ARE NOT AND SHOULD NOT be construed as an appropriate birth control method!)
Available in both a tube with a flip-top for external use only and as a set with applicators for internal use, Pre-Seed itself is clear with a gel-like consistency. Though it’s virtually flavorless, some may find it to have a slightly bitter taste due to the lack of sweeteners. It is recommended that users start with a quarter-sized amount, but for individuals who have high dryness issues, a second application may be necessary to prevent tackiness (being gummy or sticky). As a water-based lube, Pre-Seed is safe for use with all toys and condoms, but can become sticky without reapplication or a small amount of water. It is one of the more expensive lubes on the market ($20-$22 for 2.5oz), but when baby-making is your goal, less expensive lubricants are not as helpful for conception.
Important things to note:
Unfortunately, Pre-Seed contains parabens, commonly used preservatives that have been known to cause allergic reactions, accelerate skin aging, and are potentially linked to breast cancer. Pre-Seed is glycerin-free, though, making it a good option for those who are prone to yeast infections.
While most lubricants contain high salt and ion levels that dehydrate and slow sperm, Pre-Seed features an isotonic formula that provides just the right balance to keep them going strong. The most widely known isotonic formulas are sports drinks, so you can imagine Pre-Seed as being Gatorade for conception!
Keeping It Clean:
As a water-based product, Pre-Seed naturally absorbs into the skin, so you can simply rub it into the skin, even with multiple applications, or simply wash it off with water, without having to worry about it staining fabric.
When evaluating which lube is right for you, there are always many variables to consider, particularly given your own personal set of priorities. If your top priority is conception, Pre-Seed is the only lube currently proven to be “safe for sperm.” For folks looking for the longest-lasting lube for their dollar without concern for conception, Pre-Seed may not be the best choice. In order to avoid uncomfortable stickiness, heavy and/or frequent applications can prove to be an expensive proposition, considering the tube size is fairly small (2.5oz.)
